Ye Jun finally settled down, and Zhongli Zixi’s mood improved a lot, so when he went out and saw Ze Que sneakily lurking atop the wall, it wasn’t that annoying.
Zhongli Zixi was using the name Yan Xi as an alias, and Ze Que was very worried while he stayed in Master Fang Si’s house to expel the gu, so he came to the door every day asking to see him. At that time, Zhongli Zixi was very agitated due to the matter with Ye Jun and really didn’t feel like dealing with Ze Que, so he always refused. After waiting for several days without meeting anyone, Ze Que felt that the situation was very serious and thought Yan Xi had been imprisoned by Master Fang Si, so he furtively sneaked in to take a look. Seeing that Yan Xi was actually completely unharmed, he relaxed a little, but kept having doubts, so he was forced to hide atop the wall every day.
A fever-reducing medicine was delivered to Zhongli Zixi at noon, and Ye Jun obediently let him feed him, but his gaze would always land outside of the window.
Zhongli Zixi naturally knew what he was looking at, Ye Jun’s five senses were sharper than his, so he must have felt that Ze Que was an eyesore.
Thinking about this, Zhongli Zixi turned his head to the side and looked out the window, seeing Ze Que squatting between the branches of the trees in a daze, holding his sword, not knowing his hair was filled with fallen leaves and that there was a fat little white-bellied kingfisher perched on the top of his head.
Even though he came every day, Zhongli Zixi hadn’t relented and agreed to see him, and he also behaved himself and didn’t dare take action without permission, which was a little pitiful when thinking about it.
Ye Jun rarely enjoyed his Master’s tenderness, and knew it was time to be satisfied, but he opened his mouth and said: “Young Master, why does Ze Que come every day and always stares at you?”
“How could I know? You ask him.” Zhongli Zixi put down the bowl and moved it to the side of the table, indicating that the servant girl should take it away.
Ye Jun had a faint guess in his mind, but it was really too irritating, so he didn’t dare think too much.
“Then I will really ask.” Ye Jun said.
“……” Zhongli Zixi shot him a glance, thinking: Is it really worth caring so much?
Ye Jun thought about it again, and finally still asked: “Are you going to tell the the Eldest Young Master?”
Zhongli Zixi had already thought about this, so he spoke with a bitter smile: “Of course I need to inform him. But I used false news about Yue Changsheng to deceive him who knows how many times before, so now he probably won’t believe me again.”
When lunchtime passed, and it was time to change Master Fang Si’s medicine for the afternoon, a servant girl came to get him.
Zhongli Zixi stood up and said: “I will go over first, you help me send a letter to my brother. I can’t hold a pen now, so it’s up to you what to write.”
Ye Jun borrowed some pen and paper, wrote a brief and concise letter, and dripped candlewax on the envelope, then walked outside supporting himself on the wall wanting to call for someone to help him deliver it to a relay station. When he heard this, the attendant said: “If you want to send a letter outside, our master needs to look over the contents.”
The letter was addressed to Zhongli Court, and there was no telling what the investigation would lead to. The Second Young Master had plenty of enemies out there watching him like a tiger stalking it’s prey, so he couldn’t take this risk. Ye Jun shook his head: “I’m afraid that’s not very convenient.”
After sending the attendant away, Ye Jun was just thinking that he should wait a few days for his injuries to get better and go himself, when he saw Ze Que leap down from the tree branches and land next to him as light as a feather, asking: “Do you want me to help? I won’t peek.”
Ye Jun looked him up and down non-committally: “You’re really enthusiastic.”
“Hey….. You two really don’t have to be so guarded against me.” Ze Que was anxious to explain himself, “The first time I saw Young Master Yan, I just felt that he wasn’t an ordinary person, and after hearing you calling him Young Master1 I’m even more convinced. Young Master Yan’s identity is clearly not ordinary, but he has to accept other people’s orders for money; your gongfu is so outstanding, but you were so seriously injured. So I guessed that you were persecuted by your enemies and ended up here….. I only want to do my best to help you, I don’t have any bad intentions.”
After Ze Que finished speaking, he anxiously muttered to himself again: “But since your enemies could injure you, they must be very powerful, I’m also not too sure of what I can do, so I can only do as much as possible.”
Ye Jun thought that if Ze Que knew these injuries were from him stabbing himself, he feared the other might treat him as mentally handicapped, so he feigned surprise and said: "You are really smart."
Ze Que smiled in embarrassment: “Not- not really, I’m not that smart.”
Ye Jun sincerely though: You’re right.
Then he recovered and said: “We are actually quite safe, you don’t need to come every day.”
Ze Que earnestly replied: “Young Master Yan saved my life, he’s my benefactor, so naturally I should protect him at all times.”
Ye Jun really thought this storyline felt like déjà vu.
He knew Ze Que was taken in by someone when he was a child and lived in seclusion in the mountains, and later when that person died of an illness Ze Que left the mountain alone, but he didn’t know the ways of the world and suffered much humiliation, then he was saved by the Eldest Young Master who was passing by. Due to the Eldest Young Master’s nature, it was common for him to have several flings here and there, and he casually flirted with him when he saw his beautiful looks, but he never would have expected that Ze Que would be hell-bent on following him from then on.
Ye Jun thought: This guy’s fledgling complex2 is still so strong.
Before, it was the Eldest Young Master that saved him, so Ze Que was glued to him. Now, the Second Young Master saved him, and Ze Que arrived once again.
Ze Que finished speaking, then lowered his head with a sad expression: “But I waited several days, and he didn’t want to see me, so maybe he doesn’t like me.”
Ye Jun said: “My Master is a little tsundere3, you get used to it.”
Ze Que whispered: “But I have something to ask him.”
Ye Jun spoke: “Then just ask.”
Ze Que nodded: “You’re right, I need to hear it from his own mouth. Even if he doesn’t like me, as long as he tells me so, I won’t come around to bother him any more.”
Ye Jun: “I….. I was just saying.” Why are you taking it so seriously?
Ze Que took the letter and ran off to deliver it in an instant, then came back fast as lightning.
He intended to have a just and honest conversation, with no more crouching on top of the wall, so he held his sword by the hilt and stood with his back ramrod straight in the courtyard, waiting for Zhongli Zixi to return.
This scene was very familiar, it looked just like the times long ago when the Eldest Young Master would go out philandering and Ze Que would obediently wait for him to come back to Zhongli Court.
Ye Jun felt like he had dug his own grave.
Two people, one inside, one outside, waited for the same person with a lot on their minds. It was almost nightfall when Zhongli Zixi walked through the moon gate, and he immediately felt like the atmosphere was heavier than in the past. Ze Que watched him nervously, looking like he had something to say.
Zhongli Zixi was in a pretty good mood, so in a rare move he took the initiative to acknowledge him: “Do you need something?”
Ze Que then asked: “I’ve always felt like I’ve met you before….. Do we know each other?”
Zhongli Zixi shook his head lightly. Although they were both at Zhongli Court during that time, Zhongli Zixi had a very high position, so Ze Que didn’t have many opportunities to meet him. When they met after he lost his memory, Ze Que felt he looked familiar the first time he saw him, but he knew Ze Que had mistaken him with his similar-looking older brother.
“You saved my life, I want to repay you.” Ze Que asked with some hope, “Can I be your guard?”
Zhongli Zixi spoke without thinking: “I have Ye Jun.”
After he finished speaking, he suddenly felt like his own reaction had been inappropriate. He shouldn’t have only one guard, this had nothing to do with whether Ye Jun was there or not, so he didn’t understand why he had automatically refused.
When he thought about Ye Jun, he suddenly remembered he was about to miss the time for his medicine, so Zhongli Zixi made to leave, casually saying: “Is there something else?”
“Can I touch you a bit?” Ze Que resisted the embarrassment and cautiously asked.
Zhongli Zixi was completely taken aback, speaking in a daze: “Huh?”
“It’s just, here…..” Ze Que gestured, lifting his hands to gently caress his cheek, and his thumb stroked over that teardrop mole at the corner of his eye. With the teardrop mole covered, he felt that his face was even more familiar, and his heart swelled like it was about to burst and his face suddenly blushed.
Ye Jun was turning over in his grave! I have never stroked the Young Master’s little face!
Only then did Ze Que realise what he was doing, so he retreated in a panic, wanting to apologise, but he hadn’t even opened his mouth when he was grabbed by the collar and lifted away by someone, and in the blink of an eye he was moved out of the courtyard and thrown face-first into the street.
The movements of the person that threw him had been too fast, so Ze Que hadn’t seen them clearly, and Zhongli Zixi naturally also did not catch them.
He was stunned, and his gaze turned back to the inside of the room. Ye Jun was still in the same position as before, sincerely leaning against the headboard of the bed with not a single hair in disarray, the only thing was that the quilt covering him a moment ago had suddenly vanished, disappearing without a trace.
Zhongli Zixi knew very well how Ze Que felt towards the Eldest Young Master. Since he wasn’t actually dead, and even had an opportunity to start over, it might not be a bad thing. It was only because he looked like his brother that Zhongli Zixi was forcefully drawn into this mes, and he couldn’t even explain himself, which was really unfair.
Zhongli Zixi sat by the head of Ye Jun’s bed, helplessly saying: “He just got the wrong person, why are you getting angry with him?”
Ye Jun spoke with a serene expression: “It wasn’t me, I didn’t do it.”

1 A little terminology lost in translation: Ze Que refers to him as 公子, Gongzi, which is a polite term to address young men of good standing (think ‘gentleman’), while Ye Jun calls him 少爺, Shaoye, which means something closer to ‘young master of the house’ and implies a status and wealth that gongzi does not because it’s usually (but not always) used by servants and other members of the house. The word for ‘young master’ in the title for the Eldest/Second Young Master is Shaoye, while the word for ‘young master’ followed by a surname is usually Gongzi (in CN it is Surname+Gongzi instead).
